Did you actuall meet with yours and see him at another venue or did you just pick him out of a directory?

We have not picked one yet but we definitely plan on making him show us how he works before we hire him on.

Hi Everyone,
First you need to meet with your DJ and ask him if he or she has any video footage. This will give you first hand look at there style and mannerism. Lots of Dj's now post video footage on there website or even on http://www.youtube.com. Going to see a Dj in action may not be the best thing unless they are doing a Bar or Club gig as most parties are private. How would you feel if a Dj asked a possible client to show up at your event. All Professional Dj's will provide these vidal tools when they meet with to include a reference list.

Thanks, Dj_RonnieG

I've been doing weddings for about 7 1/2 years now, and through that time I've met some really interesting people and have been turned on to some great music. Our DJ company isn't a big corporation, but done by just me and my wife, and I've been asked if clients can see us at work at a wedding, and unfortunately, it's not a good idea to invite outsiders to a client's wedding, even though I would love to sometimes. When clients contact us about their wedding, I offer a personal meeting between the parties to give them a feel about us, what we do, how we orchestrate weddings and so forth. Although I don't have video of me actually performing, I do create videos set to their first dance that include both still images and video of their wedding that I send to them in appreciation of their business. I also offer to send out our info packet at no cost which has bios about us, packages, FAQ, and a promo DVD with their own customized price. And even though we don't have a video of us announcing events, in my opinion, performance is only half the ingredient to a successful wedding reception. Planning to me is the vital part, because if you get a DJ that "wings it" throughout the night, you never know what's coming next or when. For instance, you want to have events that will include the guests, not just make them feel like just an audience, and this is something I always suggest to my brides. Some think that $1800 DJ's are worth every penny, but that isn't always the case. Ask for references and testimonials. I had missed a wedding by about a week because her mother-in-law picked out this $1800 DJ, and when I asked the bride if he's helped her in the planning, she simply said that he needs her to send him the flow chart, to which I couldn't believe that this guy is asking for this much money and not at least assisting her in the planning process; so I showed her what she needs to choose and the best time to schedule events. The best way to pick out a DJ is to contact the people he's done weddings for. :)
